PANCHAKARMA TREATMENT FOR MENTAL DISEASES

PANCHAKARMA TREATMENT FOR MENTAL DISEASES

Prevention and Treatment of Mental Disorders in Ayurveda..

Panchakarma is a collective term which indicates five major therapeutic procedures of detoxification to cleanse the body channels, along with many other supportive procedures. Literally, Panchakarma is made up of ‘Pancha’ means ‘five’ and ‘karma’ means ‘procedure / action’ (procedures of purification).

The mental health benefits of panchakarma are numerous. Panchakarma is a science of the body and mind that is thousand of years old. It has continually helped people to maintain optimal health and prevent illnesses of the body and mind.

In Ayurveda Mind is considered as dual organ means as Sensory and Motor in nature, so the diseases of mind are affecting both mind and body.

In Ayurveda for treating ailments of the head region ( for example, mental and brain disorders, sinusitis, weakness or ailments of senses, falling and greying of hair).

Ether and air are the first two elements which form vata energy that perform all the functions which are agile and involve movement. The brain and nerve functions and cognition are the functions performed by vata energy.

Treatment is given with brain and nerve strengthening medications and so on. Various rasayanas are prepared with Ayurvedic drugs and are given orally. Medicated oils are also prepared from these drugs for external applications like Body Treatment, Shirobasti or shirodhara.

The Panchakarma Bio Cleansing the five therapy procedures are very much effective in mental disorders. During panchakarma, the deeply accumulated morbid disease causing material is removed. It is believed that the morbid toxic material accumulated in long term passes the brain barrier, causing mental diseases.

The preparatory procedure for main panchakarma , the body treatment is very much effective in many mental disorders; different types of medicated oils are used in body procedure. A whole series of body treatment is part of the process that begins to release this physical and emotional stress.

During and after panchakarma treatment the body begins to heal, and the mind and spirit begin to experience a clarity that can be profound. Mentally one can begin to assimilate input coming from all six senses with a clarity that surpasses ones previous capacity. As the mind and body connect better and heal interdependently the spirit of the person opens to new possibilities.

When the body begins to heal in panchakarma treatment, the toxins that are stored in the cells are released over a period of time (several weeks to months). which also detoxify and clear any blockages that may be present in the subtle channels of the brain as well as rejuvenating and strengthening the mind. Most toxins in the body are created by the food we eat and our reactions to the challenges of life. The food we eat can prevent the digestive organs from making enzymes that enhance the digestive process. When food in not digested efficiently toxins build up on the walls of the stomach, small and large intestines, the liver and all the organs of digestive system.

Therefore when one area of the mind or body is suffering it upsets the balance in other areas of the body and mind. Panchakarma takes into account the whole person, consisting of mind, body and spirit. The stresses from emotions stay in the memory of cells of the body preventing the organs and nervous system from interacting and communicating with each other. Stress ties us up and diminishes the ability of all systems of the body and mind to communicate with each other.

The ability to handle normal emotions becomes so difficult that we begin to question ourselves. Many times in a negative way. As a panchakarma practitioner, i understands how physical and emotional stress is stored in the body and needs to be released.

All the systems of the body are a functioning unit and work together to run smoothly much like an automobile. The idea is that if one organ is upset than a ripple like effect take place in the entire body. As we have all experienced with our automobiles when one part is breaking down the car can no longer function well. Panchakarma is a holistic system of healing that incorporates the mind, body and spirit and the treatments involve every area of the body.

Nasya:

Nasya treatment, which is a part of Panchakarma or the five purification practices, is given with special medicated oils through the nasal passage. The nose is considered the gateway to the head and the medications induced through the nasal passage open the channels in the head, improve oxygenation, and hence the functioning of the brain. Nasal medication is advocated in many mental disorders, it is considered a port for brain for drug delivery. Many herbs are routinely used in Ayurveda and other traditional medicine for mental disorders.

Stress and brain have a strong relation with each other. By providing nourishment to brain, stress can be eliminated from root and hence helps in preventing psychosomatic disorders. Hence, we can say that Ayurveda can be a promising alternative in psychosomatic disorders.

There is a technique of holding plenty of oil in the centre of the scalp, called shirobasti. Another technique which is called shirodhara that involves pouring medicated oil on the forehead and letting it flow backwards on the entire scalp. This is a very popular technique now a days, as it relieves daily stresses.

These treatment modalities will stimulate the brain, crossing the Blood brain barrier. This will help to manage the condition.

One of the fundamental concepts of Ayurvedic disease management is to eliminate toxic materials (vitiated doshas) from the body in order to cure a disease; this is called as Panchakarma therapy and is designed to eliminate the toxic materials. It is postulated that the toxic materials of the body need to be eliminated radically before a palliative therapy is given. The palliative therapy in the form of drugs and diets may not be effective unless the body channels are properly cleansed and toxic materials are eliminated. Panchakarma is believed to purify or cleanse all the body tissues and to bring about the harmony of neuro-humours (tridosas) (i.e. vata, pitta, kapha, and manasa doshas (i.e. satva, raja, and tama)) and to obtain long-lasting beneficial effects.

Panchakarma procedures include whole-body treatment with medicinal oils (abhyanga), streaming of medicinal oils on the forehead (shirodara), herbalized steam treatment (svedana), nasal administration of medicinal oils (nasya), emesis (vamana), purgation (virechana), and enemas (bats). The specific components and duration of the Panchakarma therapy vary by individual, medical condition, and the extent of dosha imbalance.

Within Ayurveda, depression is also a disorder of the brain, but unlike in biomedicine, it is always associated with at least one fluid or dosha, i.e. data, pitta and kapha. Interestingly, a correlation exists between biomedicine and all three doshas, i.e. they have physiological equivalents. Ayurvedic practicioners argued on the basis of science how Vata is always responsible for the transmission of electrical impulses and their movements, thus in the long run an excess, lack or balance of this quality determines the brain activity. Pitta is associated with enzymes and neurotransmitters. Their levels may be too high or too low, meaning this quality is not in balance. Kapha dosha is associated with the cerebrospinal fluid which is responsible for the quality of the brain. Eastern traditions emphasize connectedness and holism, meaning everything people think, experience and feel have a ects on the mind and the body.

Panchakarma procedures have been traditionally used in the Ayurvedic treatment of many psychiatric conditions and many scientifuc studies support such use and demonstrate positive e ects in the field of mental health. Panchakarma should be initiated only after a consultation with an experienced Ayurvedic doctors.

Promoting mental health and well-being through Ayurveda.

In holistic Ayurvedic medicine and body treatment the goal is to cleanse the body with natural herbs, soothing food that aid in digestion and developing a spiritual lifestyle. Therefore we maintain our health daily attending to the mind, body and spirit.

Ayurveda regards mental illness as a consequence of doshic and gunic imbalances, which results in mistakes of the Intellect (prajnaparada) which is the true root cause of all mental disorders.

CHILDREN WITH CEREBRAL PALSY AND PANCHAKARMA,

There are some Efficacious Ayurvedic Panchakarma Procedures in Children with Cerebral Palsy.

Various Panchakarma Procedures are found to be beneficial in the management Cerebral Palsy.

Thus, Ayurveda is “the science of life” and is related to maximizing the health, vitality and longevity with wise lifestyle choices. Ayurveda offers treatments of hundreds of diseases, but its primary emphasis is on the prevention and optimization of health with careful attention to diet, activity, circadian rhythms, seasonal and environmental influences, psychological behaviour and spiritual practices. Ayurveda is a holistic medical system, defining life as an inseparable connectedness of body, mind and spirit.

Charaka asserts that Ayurveda is the most sacred of all because it does good to people in respect of their present life as well as the life beyond (reincarnation), because all living beings, including spirits and deities, are part of this cycle of rebirth (samsara). This conception suggests that the life process itself has no beginning and no ending; every event is determined by its antecedents.

Furthermore, it is necessary to eliminate ama (accumulated toxins in the channels) and to re-establish the homeostasis. The five main procedures within panchakarma are: vamana (emesis), virechana (purgation), nasya (nasal instillation of herbal oils/powders), basti or vasti (herbal enema), and raktamokshana (bloodletting). Primarily, these practices are aimed at eliminating ama (toxins) from to body and cleanse the channels. Each procedure is performed in three phases: Poorva karma (preparatory methods), Pradhana karma (main procedure) and Paschat karma (post- cleansing
procedures which include dietary and behavioural regimen).

Panchakarma is the ultimate mind body healing experience for detoxification of the body, for strengthening the immune system, to restore the balance and wellbeing
