ABHYANGA

ABHYANGA:
A POWERFUL PRACTICE FOR BALANCING THE NERVOUS SYSTEM : SOOTH YOUR NERVES WITH ABHYANGA
Abhyanga: Powerful Recharger and Rejuvenator For Mind and Body
The nervous system impacts every breath, feeling, decision, and experience in our lives. Most of us tend to focus our attention on the imbalances of the physical body, yet ayurveda points to the mind as the root of all our imbalances. Generally, we want to keep the mind and the nervous system in a state of balance. This means first bringing awareness to the stress in our system, then doing practices that bring a sense of spaciousness and ease to our system. Offering ourselves daily practices like abhyanga generates awareness and feeds us nourishment to keep our mind and nerves resilient and adaptable.
Abhyanga is an easy, relaxing practice that can give our nerves the extra love and care they need to remain relaxed, content, and zen during this time of year. Abhyanga is an Ayurvedic oil Body Treatment technique that has been used for centuries to boost the health of our skin, lymphatic system, nervous system, and even your digestive tract.
“The entire body is made up of unctuous substances and all of life depends upon them.” - Sushruta
Abhyanga are designed to deeply penetrate the body/mind through the skin. The skin’s seven layers are the body’s primary pathway for detoxification. They also are a main channel of absorption and secretion as well as a storehouse of fat, water, glucose, and salt. The skin regulates body temperature, water balance, and is a major producer of endocrine hormones.
Skin's nerves, blood vessels, and glands carry vital information and nutrients to every other organ, and help to regulate critical bodily functions, including water and temperature control, absorption, secretion, and excretion..
The skin is the largest organ of the body with a billion microbes per every square centimetres. Oiling the skin helps keep the skin micro biome healthy, which in turns support your immunity and the active communication between the skin microbes, the environmental microbes, the gut microbes and the function of the whole body. There are at least 1,000 sensory neurons per every square centimeter of your skin. The neurons are constantly exposed to (and aggravated by) wind, clothes, pollutants, toxic skin-care products, and more. By giving yourself a full-body oil Body Treatment, you are nourishing an uncountable amount of neurons (at least 1-million in your arm alone!). A big concern environmentally is that of chemical exposure to the skin of various chemicals like pesticides in agriculture and other hazardous chemicals which escape into the environment and are easily absorbed through the skin. Abhyanga is deeply calming for your nervous system and brings the healing power of oil and touch into your muscles and skin to help move out toxins.
Ayurvedic oils are one of the best, most natural things you can put on your skin. Enjoy this sacred time with sneha—oil—to give yourself some sneha—love.
Abhyanga or Snehana Chikitsa is an ancient Ayurvedic body treatment that oils and lubricates the body using specific strokes, pressure and oils formulated for your unique constitutional imbalances. “snehana” means fat, oil or love and “chikitsa” means treatment. Thusly, abhyanga is a treatment of love.

It assists development of healthy body, helps in improvement of body figure, recuperates the body tissues and reduces body weight as well as fat. Abhayanga with warm oil helps loosen toxins from the soft tissues in the body, allowing them to be removed by the elimination systems of our bodies.
Some of the more benefits of Abhyanga are – Mrijaprada (cleanses dirt), Varnaprada (improves the body complexion), Twakdardyakara (helps to maintain the elasticity of skin), Vyadhikshamatwa (restore the natural immunity), Jarahara(rejuvenates body tissues, promotes health and Prevents aging process), Vatahara (alleviates Vata dosh), Kaphahara (alleviates Kapha dosha), Abhighata sahyatva (reduces the effect of trauma if any), Kleshasaha (helps to overcome anxiety as well as stress), Shramahara (relaxes muscle and relieves fatigue), Balavan(improves the physical strength), Dhatu pushti janana (promotes the excellence of body tissues), Priyadarshana (beautifies the body figure), Swapna kara (induces sound sleep), Drishti prasadakar (improves eyesight), Pushtikara (recuperates and nourishes the body tissues), Ayushkara (by nourishing the body tissues Abhyanga prolongs one’s lifespan.
Improve sleep patterns and much, much more.
The sensation of abhyanga is so deeply nourishing to your nervous system, mind, skin, muscles, and joints that it is like being wrapped up in loving arms.
Sleep deeply as you calm your nervous system with abhyanga. Oil is heavy, stable, warm, calm, and grounding - all the qualities of sound sleep! Abhyanga softens your tight muscles and even nourishes dried-out joints. Treating your muscles unblocks stagnation, allowing important circulation of nutrients and oxygen to reach painful places in your body. Oil seeps in and lubricates dry, painful joints so that they can move freely.
Constipation, especially during times of stress, can be due to a contraction of your abdomen, low belly, and even as deep as the smooth muscle that lines your small and large intestines. Abhyanga encourages the soft release of these muscles, bringing ease back to your bowel movements. If you suffer from constipation, spending extra time on your abdomen during your Abhyanga practice, will encourage regular elimination of stools.
Try to our Abhyanga into your schedule once a week and see how that small but powerful change makes a difference in. For a stronger effect, commit to doing abhyanga twice a week for just one month. The physical and mental changes you feel can be quite dramatic, you may also notice not only benefits in your skin, but a subtle change in the way you feel. Anxieties will be replaced as a sense of calm steadily seeps into your life.
I designed this treatment by blending abhyanga with the marma points and lines of energy that map one’s body. Abhyanga is a form of oleation (oil) therapy used in Panchakarma that includes using dosha-appropriate oils, touch, and strokes as well as manipulation of marma points to bring equilibrium and balance to the dosha. Using specific warmed oils according to your dosha, this healing treatment restores and replenishes the body, mind and nervous system. Panchakarma is a cleansing or purifying practice used in Ayurveda to balance the dosha and remove toxins from the body, mind and spirit.
Furthermore, the simple act of touching your body has extremely calming, soothing affects on the mind. Our hands and feet are especially responsive to touch. The oil, which feeds good microbes on the skin, has been shown to increase production of oxytocin. Oxytocin is a hormone that facilitates love, care, and bonding.
According to Ayurveda oil calms Vata or Nervous System. Vata governs the nervous system...dded Vata energy might make you feel flighty, disconnected, or anxious ( we need to stay warm and grounded – mentally, emotionally and physically). One of the principle uses of abhyanga is to pacify Vata dosha (the air/ether humour in the body). Managing Vata dosha is a big part of maintaining balance in the body for everyone. Vata is the dosha which moves everything. Abhyanga nourishes and brings balance to the ; dosha (vata, pitta, kapha); vayus (subdosha of vata that control all the movement in the body/mind); nadis (energy pathways); and chakras (vital energy centres).
Natural urges have to be cleared as and when they manifest, lest they will causes imbalance of Dosha and produce symptoms. Holding or suppressing these urges produces certain symptoms. Abhyanga is advised for the treatment of symptoms caused by holding or suppressing the urges of Adhovata, Shakrit, Mutra, Kshut, Nidra, Shramaswasa, Vamathu, Shukra etc.
Sneha used for Paana, Nasya, Anuvasana and Abhyanga at the proper time, quickly brings down the aggravated Vata. Abhyanga is indicated mainly in Vata predominant states of diseases. Oleation along with sudation brings down the disfigured and painful body parts due to aggravated Vata into normalcy. The analogy given by Vagbhata about Abhyanga is worth explaining here. Vagbhata says that proper Snehana and Swedana given to an inanimate dry stick will help to regain its original condition, then what to say about the living body. Some of the diseases in which Abhyanga is indicated in Ayurveda are as follows:
1. Vata Vyadhi 2. Shwayathu 3. Kushta Vata Rakta 4. Switra Hidma 5. Rajayakshma 6. Twagasrita Jeernajwar 7. Dahajwar Madatyaya (Vatika) 8. Mutrakricha (Vatika) 9. Vriddhi (Vatika) 10. Gulma (Vatika) 11. Vatika Kasa 12. Kshataj kasa and Shwasa 13. Sheetajwar 14. Rakta Pitta

ABHYANG : AN AYURVEDIC ANTI-AGING RITUAL
Ayurvedic mind-body type and what it means for wellness.
Abhyanga: The Art of Self Love For Pregnancy and Post Partum Bliss.
The day of performing self-abhyanga, you will probably feel the difference. Even just doing the “quick version self-abhyanga” (head, feet and hands) will help you sleep like a baby.
A compact body is characterized by the symmetrical and well divided bones, well-knit joints and well bound muscles and blood. An individual having a compact body is very strong, otherwise he is weak. Thus a patient should be examined with reference to his samhanana or compactness of the body. This is the main reason for why Ayurveda has given paramount importance on maintaining a positive health, either by following strict routine daily life and doing particular things or by getting some therapeutic measures, like Rasayana, Panchakarma etc. Abhyanga is the therapeutic intervention of Panchakarma in which the body is treated with simple or medicated oil on particular body part according to need. Whenever there is a discomfort or uneasiness over the body we unknowingly try to soothe it through Abhyanga.
Maharshi Charaka has mentioned that the physician, who is always conversant with the various aspects of the entire body, is verily proficient in the Ayurveda which can bring about happiness to the universe.
Acharya Charaka described 107 points (Marmas) in the Sharir Sthana 6th chapter. These are most lively in expressing the connection of Consciousness (our most fundamental nature) to physiology. It is said that touching these vital points can have both positive and negative results. Proper massage of these points helps dissolve stresses or remove blocks accumulated there. Removing stress improves physiology directly. Sushruta described the effects of rubbing with characteristic emphasis upon the Pitta value that rubbing and friction tend to dilate the orifice of the (superficial) ducts and increase the temperature of the skin.
Rubbing specifically improves the complexion of females and gives a lovely appearance, cleanliness, beauty and suppleness to the female form. Friction pacifies Vata, cures itches, rashes and eruptions. Therefore, by the Law of Similarity and Dissimilarity the heat generated in this fashion balances the cold Vata and also helps liquefy impurities which block physiology and the motion of rubbing provides the impetus for moving the impurities to the channels of elimination.
Balanced physiology is the best means of preventing disease and health can mean longer life. Acharya Charka states.
Abhyanga is a profound practice of rejuvenation and loving self-care that benefits both the physical body and the more subtle realms of consciousness. Abhyanga also contributes to a qualitatively better life by promoting many side-benefits. The functioning of the sense organs benefits from the lubricating and releasing actions of Herbal oil. Sensitivity is proportionate to proper functioning. The Herbal oil makes tissue stronger and more flexible. This means that the senses can work efficiently. The fact that dirt, toxins and other stresses are released by the presence of Herbal oil means that these “filters”, which cloud perceptions, cease to impair sensitivity and accuracy of sensory experience. Therefore, to expect good hearing, taste, healthy sensitivity to touch, vision and smell from regular application of Herbal oil. Alternatively, you can choose your oils seasonally or according to your current condition.
"The body of one who uses oil massage regularly does not become affected much even if subjected to accidental injuries or strenuous work. By using oil massage daily, a person is endowed with pleasant touch, trimmed body parts and becomes strong, charming and least affected by old age. - Charka Samhita..
