Have you ever found that you feel heavy and sluggish all day? Do you sometimes wake up at early morning worrying, and have a hard time falling back asleep?
Doshas rule our bodies, but they also rule nature and the universe in the way of time and space. so when we go in accordance with nature, we will function at our best. Your daily routine will help & guide you as to which energies (doshas) govern which times of day and if you understand these forces, you can tune into the natural rhythms of the world.
Doshas rule certain times of day, seasons, and stages of life, so once we know what energies are strongest at specific times, we can go with the flow of those energies to achieve overall balance.
Each four hour time period (24 hours a day) is dominated by one dosha, and thus influenced by the qualities of that dosh by day and night. Understanding this allows you to choose activities, food choices, etc. that will support the dominant energy inside and around you at that time.
As you know time periods always begin with kapha dosha (morning). Ayurveda teaches that it’s best to get up in the morning before 6:00 am. This is because at 6:00 am, kapha becomes dominant. Kapha is the energy of water and earth, and so is heavy and sluggish. If you awaken during kapha time, which is between 6:00 am and 10:00 am, which is a hard time waking up. I
So it’s best to get up before 6:00 am and set your Morning Routine.
Most of us break the day into work time, our time, and sleep time. Ayurveda sees the day differently, breaking it into six four-hour zones—one day zone and one night zone for each of the three doshas. To live a balanced life and enjoy the good health it brings, we need to keep our daily rhythms set to the age old ayurvedic clock.
Ayurveda also encourages us to eat our primary meal in the middle of the day, when the fire of pitta dominates.
At about 6 in the evening, we move again from vata to kappa dosha......dull, slow, stable, heavy.
Whatever your current morning routine, the fact that you have one is a sort of Ayurvedic ritual. Your daily routine is called your dinacharya, or “to be close to the day. This means being in touch with the earth’s natural cycles, such as waking up when the sun rises and going to sleep when it sets.
Ayurveda is based on the natural elements found on Earth: fire, water, earth, air, and ether (space). We have all experienced each of these elements.
These elements exist not only in the planet, but also in your body. Fire is hot and powerful, while water is fluid and cool. Earth is dense and grounding, while air is light and moving. Ether is the one you can’t see but can feel. It’s the vastness of looking up at the stars on a clear day. It’s your intuition.
Vata governs blood circulation, urine, sweat, respiration, ingestion. communication, heart function, menstruation, orgasm, hearing, touch, creativity, emotions, the nervous system, peristalsis and enzyme secretion, nutrient assimilation, exercise and all other physical movement.
Vata sleep is often light and highly variable owing to the movement and changeability of vata energy in the mind (racing thoughts) and body (heightened sensitivity). As a result, vatas tend to average between 4 to 7 hours of sleep per night.
Vata is the most delicate of the doshas, and the most likely to become imbalanced, as it is the dosha of movement.
Pitta governs digestion, metabolism, digestion, appetite, assimilation of nutrients, thirst, taste, vision, body temperature, luster of skin/hair, food/skin sensitivities, intelligence, courage, ambition, and determination, metabolism, and nutrient absorption. Pitta works in your body as digestive enzymes, helping your body break down food. Pitta is also present in your liver as bile and in your blood as haemoglobin. When you are sweating your body releases excess Pitta through it. So it’s important to sweat regularly to release built up Pitta.
Pitta sleep is moderate, meaning most pittas sleep pretty well. If they wake up during the night, they'll most often have no problems getting back to sleep.
Kappa governs lubrication, structure in the body, energy, growth, stability, repair and restoration, mucus, body mass and fat, moisture, grounding, nurturance, memory retention, including bone density, fat regulation, strength, and stamina, providing stability & support for your body, holding you together with lubricating quality, relieving friction between the cells and organs. Also bodily fluids like saliva and mucus, are related to Kapha.
Kapha is the king of sleep. They will sleep deeply, undisturbed, and for longer periods than the other two doshas. Most kaphas are likely to do over 8 hours of sleep each night.
In Ayurveda, kapha imbalance (atherosclerosis) is an underlying mechanism of heart diseases.
By listening & following to the nature of rhythms, she will reward you with optimal health, balance, and peace of mind.
