AYURVEDA AND HYPERTENSION

At first, it is essential to understand the physiological aspects of blood pressure in Ayurveda which is fundamentally based on the theory of Tridosha. This tridosha concept is the starting point for all diagnosis and treatment. The Ayurvedic dosha is read and interpreted like a blueprint outlining the basis of wellness as well as innate tendencies built into the overall individual system.

In Ayurveda, systemic arterial hypertension can be understood on the basis of involvement of vitiated Doshas where there is the involvement of Vata and Pitta predominant Tridosha, which hampers the flow of these Doshas in respective Srotas (micro-channels).
Ayurveda healing system uses the tridosha concept as its foundation for the prevention of illness and as a unique personalized medical treatment for each patient.
Ayurveda’s tridosha theory consists of principles of metabolism (pitta), principles of structure (kapha), and principles of motion (vata).
Vata Dosha
1. Prana Vayu : Prana Vayu controls the blood pressure by controlling of Vyana Vayu. So the pathology of Prana Vayu can be cause of abnormality of heart as well as vessels and developing hypertension.
2. Vyana Vata : With the help of Vyan Vata, heart will be contracts and propels blood continuously to all over body. So, it is proves that the involvement of Vyana Vata in regulation of blood pressure.
3. Samana Vayu: Samana Vayu has an important role in the blood circulation and blood pressure.
4. Apana Vayu: Apana vayu also plays important role in regulation of normal blood pressure.
Pitta Dosha
Variations in the basal metabolic rate can be understood as a result of the action of Agni or Pitta, more precisely the Pachak pitta.
KAPHA DOSH
Avlambak Kapha
Located in Heart. The normal rhythmicity, conductivity, excitability, contractility, tone and refractory period of cardiac muscle can be correlated with Avalambana karma of Heart. Therefore it can be said that Avalamabk kapha has some role on regulation of blood pressure.
When Vata predominates, an increase in blood pressure will be followed by stress, worry, strain, anxiety or insomnia. It frequently associated with nervous system disorders. Anxiety, worry, stress, and strain, are usually the main factors, therefore, treat the psychological conditions.
Pitta Dosha: When Pitta predominates, anger, nose bleed, Irritability and headaches are usually the main factors which increase high blood pressure.
Kapha Dosha: When Kapha is prominent, there may be dull headache, edema, and lethargy with obesity. Blood pressure remains continually high.
Function of the heart can be attributed to the functioning of the Vata Dosha, in particular the Vyana Vata as it is seated in the heart and is responsible for blood circulation. Charaka clearly describes that Vyana Vata, a component of Vata Dosha constantly forces the blood out of the heart and distributes it. Thus it can be said that the systolic BP attained during contraction of the heart is controlled by Vata (Vyana Vata). It is the Prana Vata situated in the Moordha (Brain) [Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutra Sthana, 12/4] that controls the heart and does Dhamani Dharana (arterial perpetuation) and thus heart rate is controlled by Prana Vata. So Vyana Vata and Prana Vata denote the nervous control of circulation because Vata, in general, denotes all neural mechanisms. Means regulation of Blood pressure can be understood by functions of Prana Vata, Vyana Vata, Sadhaka Pitta, Avalambaka Kapha, Rasa and Rakta Dhatu which are situated in Heart. The vitiation of Vata, Pitta and Kapha (Premordial factors), asthi meda etc. affects blood pressure Kapha vitiation (avalambak kapha) increases cardiac strength but due to sluggishness of kapha, it decreases the kapha and on other hand Pitta(sadhak pitta) and Vata (vyana vata) vitiation increases blood pressure.
Improper & modern sedentary lifestyle and food habits, psychological stress factors like excess worry, daily stress levels, fear, anxiety, environmental factors such as pollution-pesticides -chemicals and anger provokes and vitiates all the three Doshas to trigger the pathogenesis of hypertension. Over time, dosha imbalance can result from improper diet, poor digestion, daily stress levels, and environmental factors such as pollution, pesticides, and chemicals.
According to Ayurveda the human physiology depends on the functional dynamic state of dosha, dhatu, mala and agni. Tridosha are the biological entities which are responsible for all bodily functions and it's regulations. Triodosha are derived from panchmahabhuta and functionally tuned with the external environmental changes. Ayurveda has mentioned a lot about the rhythmic variation as diurnal and seasonal in function state of tridosha, agni, immunity and diseases propensity with respect of age, day and night and season. Thus all the chronological changes in environment effect the state of dosha, agni and produce rhythmic changes in human biology also. Ayurveda has also provided the measures to balance the dosha aggravated due to seasonal influences due to seasonal influences under the description of Dincharya and Ritucharya.
Hence to get the perfect management of hypertension without any side effects is a need of present era. In Ayurveda equilibrium of Doshas, Dhatus, Malas and Agni are considered as healthy state of an individual.
One or more of the following possibilities should be considered according to Ayurveda.
* Pathophysiological changes in the form of vitiation of Dosha(Vata, Pitta and Kapha), Dhatu and Mala Dushti.
* Psychological changes i.e. disturbances at the level of Mana (Manovaha Strotas Vikara).
* Structural changes as complications of long term hypertension on various organs like heart, blood vessels, kidney etc.
An individual’s basic constitution plays a key role in predisposition and the prognosis of diseases, as well as treatments and recommended lifestyle.
