And, it turns out, knowing your dosha can help you take care of your skin and deal with problems.
VATA
Vata regulates the levels of moisture in the body, so if you do not keep your Vata balanced, you might notice dry, uneven toned, prone to fine lines & wrinkles, flaky skin, brittle hair and nails.. It is likely to have a thin texture with fine pores. This skin type is likely to show early signs of ageing as their skin tends to get dry, dehydrated and flaky when their Dosha is imbalanced. Usually does not have clogged pores. You may also have dark under eye circles.
PITTA
Pitta skin type is extremely prone to getting tanned as it is sensitive, soft, warm and of medium thickness. Their body type is less tolerant to hot and spicy foods. When out of balance, this skin type can flare up with a sun burn, acne and sunspots.
Fair skin, often with freckles and/or moles, clear and radiant, but can occasionally be irritated and red. Easily sunburned. At risk for sensitive skin and oily skin.
According to Ayurveda, pitta is responsible for the color, texture, and temperature of our skin, as well as its luster and glow. it governs the function of sweating, processes everything that we apply externally to the skin and digests anything that contacts the skin.
So, balancing pitta means supporting healthy skin.
Pitta also has a strong presence in the blood, the liver, and the digestive tract—all of which have a direct impact on the skin. Excess pitta in any one of these areas can have an amplified effect on the skin.
KAPHA
Kapha skin type is oily, dull, thick, has a tendency of enlarged pores and is proneness to cystic acne. Since their skin is oily, it attracts more impurities from the environment.
Prone to large pores, oiliness, and acne. It’s also thicker and therefore feels soft to the touch and is much more resilient to signs of ageing. Prone to oily skin, blocked pores, and dull or pale skin. You may also have puffy eyes, and suffer from rashes.
Our skin is our largest organ and what we apply on it is absorbed to a far greater extent than most of us realise.
According to Ayurveda, your Diet and Lifestyle too play a significant role in determining the health of your skin. Kapha and Vata Prakriti people need to be more careful during the winter season.
There are various factors that can throw a person out of balance such as stress, pollution, seasonal changes and so on. In order for a person to be healthy and well, they need to balance their individual constitution. Lifestyle as a whole is important because what you eat, how you exercise and the skincare you use all play an important part in achieving this balance.”
Most people have one dominate dosha with a second that is closely tied to it while the third one has a weaker influence on personality and body type.
It is helpful to follow the Ayurvedic daily routine that best suits your dosha, but it is equally important to follow the Ayurvedic seasonal routines (Ritucharya) for us to stay in good shape and health and keep skin balanced.

In Ayurveda, the larger context of our lives—who we are, and how we got to this moment in time—is actually far more important than any one symptom. This is especially true when it comes to the skin. So, as you consider which of the therapies might best serve you, it’s your particulars that matter most: your constitution, your digestive capacity, your strengths, your weaknesses, and the sum total of your imbalances.
