SHATKARMA-YOGIC CLEANSING METHOD

YOGIC CLEANSING TECHNIQUES
Shatkarmas - Cleansing Techniques
Dhauti, Bhasti, Neti, Trataka, Nauli and Kapalabhati are the basic categories in shatkarma with many variations under them-these are known as the six cleansing processes.
The shatkarmas are yogic cleansing techniques the cleanse the subtle channels of karma as well as remove impurities and restore proper functioning of the physiology of the body.Body cleansing is brought about by the practice of the shatkarmas or six purificatory techniques which are very important from the point of view of physical and mental health. These simple techniques are also highly valuable in healing internal disorders.
The use of these techniques was meant to purify the body and mind in preparation for the various stages of enlightenment that ensue with the awakening of kundalini shakti.
The Shatkarmas (Yogic Cleansing Techniques)
The six shatkarmas are neti, cleansing of the nasal passages, dhouti, cleansing of the alimentary canal, nauli, strengthening of the abdominal organs, basti, cleansing of the large intestine, kapalbhati, cleansing of the frontal area of the brain and tratak, intense gazing of a point developing concentration and cleansing the mind.
(Also called shat kriyas or even kriyas)
1. Dhauti cleaning the stomach
2. Basti cleaning the colon
3. Neti cleaning the nasal passage
4. Nauli cleaning the abdominal organs
5. Kapalabati cleaning the respiratory organs
6. Trataka clearing the mind through gazing
Coughs, asthma and twenty kinds of diseases caused by excess mucus are destroyed through the effects of dhauti karma.
All diseases arising from excess wind, bile and mucus are eliminated from the body through the practice of basti. By practicing basti the appetite increases, the body glows, excess doshas are destroyed and the dhatu, senses and mind are purified.
Nauli is foremost of the Hatha yoga practices. It kindles the digestive fire, removing indigestion, sluggish digestion and all disorders of the doshas and brings about happiness.
Neti (nasal cleansing practice):The sinuses are cleared out and purified. With the cleansing of the channels in the head, the third eye (pineal gland) is also purified, allowing it to function optimally-an awakened Anja Chakra..Ayurveda says that neti destroys kapha diseases.
Lean forward, protrude the abdomen and rotate (the muscles) from right to left with speed. This is called nauli by the
siddhas.
Nauli is foremost of the Hatha yoga practices. It kindles the digestive fire, removing indigestion, sluggish digestion and all disorders of the doshas and brings about happiness.
Perform exhalation and inhalation rapidly like a bellows (of a blacksmith). This is kapalabati and destroys all the mucus disorders
By the six karmas (Shatkarma) one is freed from excesses of the doshas. Then Pranayama is practiced and success is achieved without strain.
The shatkarma affect and activate almost all of the vital systems in the body, especially the digestive, respiratory, circulatory and nervous systems. Each one is powerfully purifying, profoundly cleansing at all levels of ‘being’, increases and greater awareness develops.
Regular practice of Shatkarmas can help to purify the body and maintain perfect health.
