Here we have one of the most important comprehensive cleansing process, which cleanses all the way from the mouth to the anus. Approximately seven meter long folded intestine is called Shankha, a conch shell. Prakshalana means to wash thoroughly. In certain texts, Shankaprakshalana is also named Varisara Dhauti.

In the intestines, ‘residue’ accumulates, waste products remain sitting in the small folds of the intestines, around which tensions can arise, binding energy and affecting one’s well-being. When the intestines are rinsed, the residue and tensions are removed. When the coarse tensions are removed from the stomach and abdomen, you have the released energy at your disposal, and the body feels light and healthy. The skin becomes clean and soft and various kinds of skin allergies and eczema are relieved, and sometimes even disappear completely. It is therefore highly recommended for those with chronic constipation, gas, acidity, indigestion and other digestive ailments. It is beneficial for the kidneys and urinary systems,
preventing infection and kidney stones.

Shankaprakshalana purifies the blood, detoxifies the body and helps to develop good digestion. It eliminates allergies (e.g. hay fever) and skin diseases (e.g. acne, neurodermatitis or psoriasis). Further, it is helpful for springtime lethargy and has a balancing effect upon the mind. By practicing one gets a luminous or shining body. Means it creates a repair action which affects the lungs, nervous system, skin, sinus area, the whole body, continuing while the person follows the regime of special food and asanas.

Most importantly, after Shankaprakshalana, one must strictly follow the restricted diet for a minimum of the first 7-10 days. If you cannot abide by these food restrictions, then you must not do Shankaprakshalana. The diet in itself is not particularly strict, but your adherence to it, and your own self discipline, need to be strict or you will just create a recipe for personal damage.

In addition to drinking the salted water, 5 stretching exercises are practiced to encourage the washing of the digestive organ.
